Encoder issue and a suggestion for bigger chords
Posted by: mage2k - 01-03-2020, 09:41 PM - Forum: General Support - Replies (3)

Hello,

I received my NDLR and, while I've been having a blast my Matriarch and soft-stuffs with it, however: Value changes via knob movements are very inconsistent in that it can be very hard to dial in specific values with the way the knobs pick up movements/changes.  A couple examples when dialing in settings in the mod matrix:

* For any given slot when changing the source, destination, or destination value it can take two or three clicks of the given knob before the value changes.

* When making changes to mod amount it can be difficult to get it to land a value change of +1/-1 as it seems it will often register it between knob "click" spots such that when letting go of the knob it slides either way into the "click" spot and thus either doesn't change the value or ends up with a +2 or -2 change.

With clicky encoders like this a single click should equal a single value change vs. nothing or +2/-2 as described above.  What's the point of the clicky encoders otherwise?

If any of the above described behavior is not expected let me know.  I'm in Portland and would be down to bring it to you wherever you're located to have a look at it.

Now for a suggestion:

* Working in the ability to build out extended chords beyond 7ths would be awesome, especially for the pad mode.  Maybe a Pad Editor and/or more chord types available in the Chord Sequence Editor?  That'd really add to the unit's utility as a theory-driven composition device.

USB ports not appearing when connected to iconnectivity Mio XL
Posted by: Bigsniff - 01-01-2020, 06:48 AM - Forum: MIDI Connectivity - Replies (23)

Curious what’s going on here. I have an Iconnectivity Mio Xl that has 10 USB host ports. It works great with any USB MIDI device I own except the NDLR, which is not being recognized when I connect it. The NDLR powers up when connected and works great but is not appearing as a USB device. I otherwise successfully have a keystep, cirklon (which appears as 6 USB devices), SQ1, microfreak, minilogue XD, Kordbot, SE engine, and more connected to these USB host ports. Any idea why the NDLR isn’t being recognized and what I can do to remedy it?

  Synth Pasta

Synth Pasta. NDLR. Get it?

https://soundcloud.com/pacothetortugamusic/synth-pasta

NDLR is connected via 5-pin to:

  • microKORG (pad)
  • Mother-32 (drone)
  • Minilogue (motif 1)
  • Reface CP (motif 2)
I started the track with The NDLR (plus rhythm machines) and then added drums, handpan, and guitars. (I don't really play guitar.)

The NDLR workflow is nice. The buttons and knobs took some getting used to. And I'm worried about their durability (after playing with it for a couple of hours). Nothing has broken. But it seemed that not every button-press registered and not every knob-turn changed a parameter. I wonder whether this experience is common.

  Gate setting on Drone
Posted by: MSaffar - 12-30-2019, 06:32 PM - Forum: Feature Requests - Replies (7)

Hi,
I really like to see some gate setting on all 4 parts, or at least on drone. No gate settings really giving me hard time with HW synths using some bass sound.

Thanks

Change KEY of Motif 1 though MIDI KB TRANS from external synth
Posted by: constzi - 12-30-2019, 02:23 AM - Forum: MIDI Connectivity - Replies (3)

I am able to control the NDLR CTRL through midi channel 16 (settings 1 page) and it changes the scales just fine when I press a note on my synth (when the Pattern Note Type of my Motif 1 is CHORD-Trans)

However, I created a new Pattern of Motif 1 that is SCALE Fixed and I am trying to control it through midi channel 15 on the KB TRANS (Settings 1 page) but when I press a key on my synth it does not change the KEY function of the NDLR, from let's say E to G. Do you know what I do wrong and how to fix it?

Note: I am able to make a random knob of my synth control and change the KEY function of the NDLR on Midi Channel 14 of NDLR CTRL. What I am trying to achieve is use the keys of my synth to control that NDLR KEY function, so I can go directly from E to let's say B without moving a knob and having to go through E-F-G-A-B. Let me know if there's anyway of achieving this. Thank you.

Question NOTE ON/OFF handling, when switching off a port.
Posted by: HighStop - 12-29-2019, 02:46 PM - Forum: General Support - Replies (3)

I have a question about using MRCC live.
If you hold a chord on a keyboard (note on) and switch off the output that received the chord (note on), then what happens:

A. The chord will hang forever.
B. The chord is stopped when the port is switch off using "All Note Off"
C. The chord is stopped when the port is switch off by sending "Note off" on the keys used.
D. The chord stays until you lift your fingers from the keyboard (note off).

I hope that it does "D" and if it does will it work with both "Note Off" and "Note On velocity = 0"?

The same goes for other type of MIDI message, if something is send while a port is on the MRCC should track it and allow
"reset" message to get thru after the port is switch off.

Thanks For some nice devices that I hope to add to my collection soon.

  Motif position error on load
Posted by: Almost Aviation - 12-28-2019, 11:55 AM - Forum: General Support - Replies (1)

(1.1.063 firmware)

I have been experimenting with creating my own motifs and I noticed that there are usually anomalies in the initial position when I load them. What I mean is, if I start the motif playing, the pitch doesn't match the location of the corresponding Position icon at the top of the screen. For example, the Position icon may be over to the right but the pitch is low. The behaviour of the Position knob and icon are otherwise as expected but the range is constrained and there only seem to be 10 distinct positions of the icon instead of 20.

I found this issue with standard patterns too. To reproduce it try the following:

(1) From menu page 3, load config 0.
(2) Set the MIDI port for Motif-1 appropriately (for me, it's USB1).

Motif-1 will already have Pattern 1 loaded. The position icon is out to the right. Rotating the Position knob moves the position icon in large steps, of which there are only 10 positions from full left to full right. You can't select higher pitches. Instrumentation shows the notes played by this stock pattern will range from C1 (full left) to G6 (full right).

The following action fixes it:

(3) Press SHIFT+MENU to enter the Pattern editor.
(4) Immediately press MENU to exit the Pattern editor.

The Position icon and knob now work correctly, with 20 distinct positions selectable. Depending on what you did to the Position knob before entering the Pattern editor, the Position icon may have moved, but it now correctly reflects the selected pitch. Instrumentation shows the range of notes available is now C1 to G8. It seems you have to enter the pattern editor separately for each of Motif-1 and motif-2 to fix it for both patterns.

I hope this makes sense.

There are also other anomalies, which are harder to demonstrate because they involve my custom patterns. I have been playing with creating Scale and Chromatic patterns. When I load one of these I get the issue described above. I fix it by entering and exiting the Pattern editor as before.

BUT

When I subsequently select another pattern (e.g. standard Pattern1) the Position knob and icon show anomalous behaviour in a different way. In the particular examples I have been playing with, the pitch tops out when the Position icon is only half-way across the screen. If I move it all the way to the right the pitch stays topped out. If I then enter and exit the Pattern editor, the Position icon is initially missing. If I rotate the knob anti-clockwise, it reappears and the knob, icon and pitch now work as expected.

My initial observation is that this behaviour doesn't happen with a Chord type custom pattern, although I haven't done any rigorous experiments.

Using a MIDI keyboard to input Motifs
Posted by: Almost Aviation - 12-27-2019, 10:17 AM - Forum: General Support - Replies (4)

What I am most interested in doing with the Motifs is to use them for simple fixed sequences, such as you can program on a regular hardware or software sequencer. The way I am doing this is to create a pattern in the pattern editor using type 'chromatic' and then entering the notes. It is laborious doing this with the knobs but I see you can also use a MIDI keyboard to enter the notes. This almost does what I expect except the recorded notes are transposed from what I play. When I have C selected as the key (the default) everything is transposed up by three semitones. I have found I can record the actual notes (almost) if I select the key to E-flat, in which case all the notes are transposed up by an octave.

I am guessing there is a 'musical' explanation for what is going on here, but is there an easier way to do what I want?
