  NDLR KB Trans Question
Posted by: steviet - 10-15-2020, 07:50 PM - Forum: General Support - Replies (10)

Hello hello! Loving my NDLR so far, but I have one small question/concern.

I wanted to use the NDLR to work on my theory, and the keyboard transposition feature seemed like an awesome way to do so. I have a keystep going into MIDI A, and the transposition feature totally works, it will always play in key.

BUT. It doesn't seem to allow me to play the notes as they would appear on the keyboard all the time.

For instance, C Lydian allows me to play the notes as they would actually be layed out on the keyboard, but C Dorian does not. If I play the D# on my keystep, it comes out as a D. It only will play D# when I press the wrong key one semi tone above D# (E). This is just one example

Does this make sense, and if it does, am I missing something? Or is this working as intended?

Really hope I'm missing something or it can be rectified by some kind of setting change, I don't want to learn these scales with the wrong notes!

Thanks, meanwhile I'll keep on NDL'n!

Not mine, but I found this one this morning and wanted to share. This is one of my favorite ways to use the NDLR... meta sequencing! Using a more traditional sequencer to sequence changes on the NDLR to make longer form compositions makes for some amazing opportunities. This is such a good example of that:

Has anyone else been messing around with this method? I'd love to hear more examples.

Night music - Downtempo NDLR jam
Posted by: KingKrog - 10-10-2020, 05:12 PM - Forum: Show me what you got! - Replies (2)

Something peaceful. I play the SV-1 and KingKorg live, so the NDLR is "just" sequencing my EMU Proteus 2000 this time.  The 2nd motif is some weird percussion bleep-bloop sound I found scrolling through the EMU presets. Completely unplanned but I kinda liked it!
As usual, i pre-programmed the chord changes.

Thumbs Up NDLR+Cubase: Setup ?
Posted by: Tadream - 10-10-2020, 06:48 AM - Forum: MIDI Connectivity - Replies (2)

Hi guys,
After 25 years out of music making (due to a busy job, building a house, raising a family, ...) I finally found some free time to get back to my favorite hobby !

I got my old D50 and Korg Wavestation back from storage, bought myself a Behringer Crave, an ASM Hydrasynth (on it's way here) and an Alesis SR16.
And since yesterday I also have an NDLR after listening to some impressive work with it from you fellow musicians.

Because I am quite unfamiliar with the possibilities of using a DAW like Cubase, I would like some help on how to setup the NDLR to work with Cubase.
What is the best MIDI setup and how do you integrate the NDLR in Cubase as I want to record the output of the NDLR.

Regards from Belgium,

Yves

  Ambient Trip Hop NDLR

Hello ??

Went for something halfway between ambient and trip hop on this one. Kinda took inspiration from the Bowery Electric album ‘Beat’.

Hope you enjoy! Headphones recommended ?

NDLR out of sync with modular
Posted by: martenmeij - 10-10-2020, 04:04 AM - Forum: General Support - Replies (5)

Hi there,

I just received my NDLR and I'm already noodling away, what a great inspirational peace of gear this is!

Besides jamming with my synths over midi, I also want my NDLR to play along with my modular system. So I set up my Pamela's New Workout clock module to sends out the clock signal (CV) to my NDLR. When I start the clock it seems like the NDLR syncs nicely with cv clock signal, but soon enough it starts running out of sync. Sometimes it catches up again, but in general the sync is too much off and unstable to be able to jam with my modular.
Anybody has had a similar experience? Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks in advance for ideas that might be helpful.

Cheers,
Marten

  control channel issues
Posted by: WaltCollinsMusic - 10-09-2020, 01:52 PM - Forum: General Support - Replies (3)

As usual, I offer my disclaimer that I'm a very new NDLR user, and maybe I'm just missing some obvious workaround or procedure. I'm here to learn, so don't be afraid to correct me or suggest alternatives.

I like using multitimbral hardware synths (Waldorf Blofeld, and Yamaha MX), and usually select 16 different sounds that I like and save them all into a single multi/performance to help me easily access them later. Sort of a "My 16 Favorite Sounds" multi. My usual process while performing is to change the MIDI channel from my keyboard controller (Novation 61SL) and hop from one sound to the next when desired by changing the MIDI port/channel. The 61SL can dynamically send to either the USB MIDI port, or to one or both of the two MIDI DIN output ports. So I can choose any of the 16 sounds on the Blofeld, or any of the 16 sounds on the MX in real time. All good so far.

Enter NDLR. Now, instead of plugging my 61SL directly into my hardware synths' MIDI DIN Inputs, I'm plugging both of the 61SL's MIDI DIN output ports into the NDLR's DIN Inputs, and the NDLR then connects its output DINs into the Blofeld and the MX MIDI DIN Inputs.

This mostly works as expected. As long as I don't use the MIDI channels 15 or 16 (the channels I've set for NDLR Cntl and KB Trans channel in my NDLR settings), everything's fine. Any MIDI notes sent to channels 1-14 on the NDLR Input A port are sent through to the Output A port (to the Blofeld), and similar with the B port (to the MX).

But if I use MIDI channels 15 or 16, the NDLR is being controlled instead. The problem is that the MIDI notes are still also being sent through to the Output ports, and being changed while doing so. For example, if I try to play any black keys on MIDI channel 15, they are simply translated to the nearest white key (i.e. always playing in C Major scale), and then sent on to the synth.

Okay, so I can obviously work around this by simply avoiding using MIDI channels 15 and 16 on the hardware synths. And I guess I'd have to mute any of those synths' sounds on channels 15 and 16 so they don't play spurious notes while I'm actually trying to control the NDLR. This is a minor loss for me, but it'll work for now.

I have some potential NDLR development suggestions that would make this situation better for me, and perhaps others.

1. Change the Settings for NDLR Cntl and KB Trans channel to NOT always be ALL input ports, and instead allow a choice of a combination of both port and channel, similar to the way the four parts' output port+channels are selected. If I had a choice to use only one input port, I could select USB and then my two MIDI DIN outputs could use all 16 channels without conflicting with the NDLR controls.

2. Regardless of if #1 is implemented, I think it would be a great idea to NOT pass through ANY MIDI notes to the output ports on the selected NDLR control ports/channels. How would these realistically be used by a destination synth anyway? They'd always be forced to play in C Major!

Thanks in advance for your consideration. Smile

Sync my Korg Volca's and other synths
Posted by: winke082 - 10-09-2020, 06:41 AM - Forum: General Support - No Replies

Hi there,

In december I have my NDLR one year.
Offcourse I have 4 hardware synth synced (Pad, Drone, Motif 1 and Motif 2).
But I cant find out how to sync my Korg Volca's.
The manual is not clear about how to sync my other hardware.

So what I mean is, when I start my NDLR to play the Volca's sync in the same BPM.
Or the other way around.
I tryed it with midi and CLk IN and CLK out.
But nothing seems to work.

Can anny one please explane.
Thanks a lot and best regards,

  user definable CC

Hi - I already RTFM multiple times and searched the Forum ... but was unable to find out, what the 'user  definable  CC' - current manual page  53 - CC1 and CC2 are, what they are for, how they work. When are they transmitted? To what value does the min to max interval refer?
thx
