The MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) has released a Specification for use of TRS Connectors with MIDI Devices. Not sure why, but they picked the Korg implementation rather than the more popular Arturia implementation. In the end, its only 3 wires so whatever 
They also spec 2.5mm jacks.
